    Max Pollak was born in Prague in 1886, dying in Sausalito, California in 1970. He was a painter and engraver, active both in Austria and later in the U.S.A. He was taught by William Unger and Ferdinand Schmutzer at the Vienna Academy of Art. In 1910, he was awarded the Prix de Rome for his etchings, a first for an etcher. In 1912, he travelled to Italy, France and Holland, to study and paint. During World War I, he was an Austrian Official War Artist. Moving to the U.S.A. in 1927, produced colour aquatints of New York, Cincinnati and Detroit, and later San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito.
    His work is represented in the collections of Oakland Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the de Young Museum, the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Princeton Museum, the British Museum, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Czech National Gallery in Prague, the Albertina Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna.

    Harold Dearden was a painter in oil and watercolour; he was born in 1888, studying at the Rochdale School of Art under H.B. Carpenter between 1905 and 1910, and at the Royal Cambrian Academy under Moira between 1910 and 1915. He exhibited at the principal London galleries and was head of the Swindon Art School between 1920 and 1950. He was elected Associate of the Royal College of Art.

    Mattia Preti was born in 1613 in Taverna (Calabria), dying in 1699 in Valetta (Malta). He was a painter of historical and religious subjects, and church painting, working in many cities in Italy and for the last 40 years of his life, on Malta, where he was made a Knight of the Order of Malta, and was known as the ‘Knight of Calabria’
    Tobias was sent by his father Tobit (in the ‘Book of Tobit’) to collect a sum of money: on the way, washing his feet in the river Tigris, he was attacked by a fish, which tried to swallow his foot; by order of the angel, he caught it.

    Charles Sillem Lidderdale (1831-1895) was a London based genre painter. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, the British Institute and the Royal Academy amongst others. His work is often small scale and the subject frequently pretty farm girls.
    His work is illustrated in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters (p.298), and in Popular 19th Century Painting – A Dictionary of European Genre Painting (p. 82)
    His work is represented in the collection of the City of London Art Gallery.

    William A Breakspeare was a London genre painter born in 1855, dying in 1914. He studied in Paris and was a foundation member of the Birmingham Art Circle. He was a member of the Newlyn School in Cornwall. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1891 and 1903 and at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Grosvenor Gallery. His subjects were mainly genre or 18th Century scenes
    His work is illustrated in the Dictionary of Victorian Artists and Popular 19th Century Painting-A Dictionary of European Genre Artists.

    Eugène François Marie Joseph Devéria was born in Paris in 1808, dying in Pau in 1865. He was a painter, watercolourist and draughtsman of religious & genre scenes and portraits.
    He studied under Girodet and in the 1820’s he set up a studio with his painter brother Achille, where the young romantics of the period would meet, among them Victor Hugo, Alfred de Musset, Delacroix Sainte-Beuve and Liszt. His first picture at the Paris Salon of 1827 was a stunning success. He received many official commissions for ceiling and wall paintings, at the Louvre, the Galerie des Batailles in Versailles, as well as church commissions. Latterly, he produced charming scenes of genre in oil and watercolour, of Pyrennean scenes and young women (‘Young Women of Ossaloise in a Mountainous Landscape’ now at the Musée de Pau)
    His work is illustrated in the Dictionnaire des Petits Maîtres de la Peinture.
    His work is represented in the Museums at Angers, Beziers, Bernay, Le Havre, Montpellier, Neuchâtel, Orléans, Rouen, Valencia, Versailles and the Louvre, Paris and the Ufizzi, Florence.

    Bill Coleman was a painter and printmaker; he was born in Ballarat, Victoria, in 1922. He studied at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and then under George Bell for six years, before working as a photolithographic and cartographic artist for over 30 years. He died in 1993.
    His work is represented in the New York Public Library Collection and several regional and many private collections in Australia.

    Loudon Sainthill was born in Hobart in 1919, dying in London in 1969. He studied at the Melbourne Techincal College and was influenced by the arrival in Melbourne of Colonel De Basil’s Russian Ballet Company. He held his first exhibition at the Australia Hotel, Melbourne and travelled to England as member of the ballet company, and held a successful exhibition at the Redfern Gallery, London. His work for the stage in Britain included The Tempest at Stratford-upon-Avon, and by 1954, when he designed ‘Le Coq D’Or’ (Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera) for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, he was established as a major designer for the theatre. He influenced a whole succession of Australian designers and established a tradition of Australia theatre design.
    His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery, Canberra, as well as many State and regional galleries, and the Victoria and Albert Museum London.
