    Derwent Lees was born in Melbourne in 1885, dying in London in 1931. He trained at the Slade School of Fine Art, London and taught at the school from 1908. He was active in Paris, and later, in Russia, Germany, Belgium and Italy. Lee’s painting ‘Pear Tree in Blossom’ featured in the exhibition ‘Tableaux Britanniques modern de la Tate Gallery’ (Modern British paintings from the Tate Gallery) at the Musée du Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1946. His paintings show the influence of Innes and Augustus John, with whom he was closely associated at the beginning of his career and whose model Euphemia Lamb, he married. He exhibited with the New English Art Club and held his first exhibition at the Chenil Galleries in 1913. Painted in the spirit of the N.E.A.C., his figure paintings, portraits and drawings became well known in London.
    His work is represented in the collections of the Tate Gallery London, the Manchester City Art Gallery, as well as many other provincial British galleries, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Art Gallery of South Australia.

    Paul Lewis Clemens was born in Wisconsin 1911 and died in Los Angeles in 1992. He spent most of his lengthy career in the Los Angeles area after moving from the Midwest, where he attended the Chicago Art Institute. He began painting for the Depression-era Works Progress Administration and won several awards for figure painting, which he taught at L.A.’s Otis Art Institute in the early 1940s. His work was exhibited at the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, Pennsylania, the National Academy of Design and the Metropolitan Museum, both in New York City. His portrait subjects include Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Audrey Hepburn, William Holden, Frank Sinatra, Henry Fonda, Eleanor Parker (former wife), Ronald Colman, Angela Lansbury and many more.
    His work is represented in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.

    Robert Russell McNee was a landscape and figure painter, born in Milngavie in Scotland in 1880, dying in 1950. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and exhibited at the Glasgow Institute for the Fine Art, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours amongst others. He enjoyed particularly the rural farm scenes of Perthshire and the east coast. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, the Glasgow Institute for the Fine Arts and the Paris Salon des Artistes Français.
    His work is represented in the collection of the Kirkaldy Art Gallery and Culzean Castle (National Trust for Scotland).
