John Absolon was born in 1815, dying in 1895. He was a painter of landscape, seascape and genre in both oil and watercolour. He first exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1832, at the age of 17. After visiting Paris, he became a member of the New Watercolour Society in 1838. He exhibited mainly at the New Watercolour Society, but also at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists.
His work is illustrated in the Dictionary of Victorian Artists and the Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists.
